Using textures in web design
What is the easiest, correct, and sometimes the only possible way to create the illusion of the relief of an element (object) in web design (as well as in 2D in general, and of course 3D)? Correct – use texture! Being a “material” universal, textures are widely used in web design and are subject to endless experiments. Textures on the sites can be found as simple, which only emphasizes certain elements of the project, and much more complex implementation. Inspired by this publication, I propose to consider several options for using textures:
“THIN” USE OF TEXTURE
You want to diversify a simple monophonic or gradient background – add a “light” texture that will not catch the eye and contrast sharply, but at the same time, it will complicate and ennoble the background. Also, it will allow a little to highlight certain objects, attracting the user’s attention to them.
An example of using textures in this way is the LogoGalas website. The site uses different variations of blue, both for the background and for fonts, there is a dark background with a menu and search on the top, the rest of the page is lighter.
small texture
Pay attention to the barely distinguishable texture in the upper part of the site (where the logo and top navigation is located). A great example of skillful work with textures! This helps to make the transition between hues of the background more noticeable and “interesting.”
Another example is the W + K Studio website. Here the texture is used along with the gradient effect for the background.

And in this case the “light” and very simple texture adds depth and “wealth” to this very gradient background.
TEXTURE AS “COARSE POWER”
In contrast to the “subtle” delicate textures, which unobtrusively add detail, bright contrasting textures sometimes work well, setting the basic tone and mood of the composition. Most often, similar textures in web design are used to highlight headings or add contrast between different columns of content on a site. You need to be quite careful about the “heavy” textures, since they can distract the user from filling the page and entice all the attention that is not good.
A vivid example of the second use of textures is the Church on the Rock website, where “strong” textures are applied quite widely.
many textures in design
In fact, the entire design (especially in its upper part) Church on the Rock is “mixed up” on contrasting textures and their interaction: individual areas of the site are distinguished by different textures, while scrolling downwards use a plain monochrome background.
No less significant is the design of the site Narfstuff, where the background texture is the brightest spot. Above the header of the site used a lot of different elements and techniques of web design, the texture while emit separate areas of the page.

With a normal or infinite scrolling down, the texture through a smooth blur goes to white – a good way to change the rich header to a completely “minimalist continuation” at the bottom of the web page.
In general, if we talk about texture in web design, this is a very interesting and useful element, with its help you can achieve very remarkable results. Personally, I really like to add various kinds of textures for blogs, as this helps the template look more capacious, impressive and highlights the main content of the site. By the way, I advise you to look at the article about the original background generators (background) – you will find a couple of useful online services with which you can create beautiful textures for the background of a web page. In general, using textures you can achieve very different results. Ultimately, everything is determined by the goal you are pursuing, and there is always a suitable texture!
P.S. On the Blogger Cheat Sheet site, you can find an article on how to set the background for the site to html and many other design publications, layout to help novice users.
